Fundamental Principles on World Red Cross Red Crescent Day and throughout 2015

This year on 8 May, World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we will launch a global conversation celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the adoption of the Fundamental Principles and their continuing relevance in humanitarian service. We will reflect together on the Fundamental Principles in our ever-changing world and their application in today’s humanitarian contexts. We will celebrate their importance and claim their enduring relevance.
Power of Humanity: The Fundamental Principles in Action, is the chosen theme of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s 32nd International Conference, to be held in December 2015. Throughout the year, we encourage you to take the opportunity to engage your constituencies and promote an awareness of the Principles, reinvigorating their use and purpose. From beneficiaries to policymakers, it is essential to remind our partners of the elements that make up the identity of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. They are central to our common identity and purpose, and key to ensuring safety for our staff and volunteers and safe access to humanitarian services for beneficiaries.
Sustained engagement is important to ensuring that the Fundamental Principles continue to be understood, applied by National Societies, the IFRC and the ICRC, and lived by Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers. To assist National Societies in ensuring that partners and communities have an understanding of the Fundamental Principles, the IFRC and ICRC will together launch a communications toolkit that can be customized to engage key stakeholders. In the coming weeks, we will share toolkit items as they become available so that National Societies are able to leverage World Red Cross Red Crescent day as a launching point to celebrate the Principles with stakeholders.
Looking forward, the Movement-wide initiative on Fundamental Principles will include regional workshops held with National Societies. The outcomes of those workshops will form a richer understanding of the practical application of the principles in the modern context. A special Facebook group has also been created to enable social dialogue. An anniversary event will take place in Vienna in October 2015.
The 50th anniversary of the Fundamental Principles is an opportunity to celebrate the Principles as a continued vital guidepost in the delivery of the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. This anniversary also provides an opportunity for each component of the Movement to strengthen further their efforts to ensure the application of the Principles.
Thank you for your collaboration in celebrating this important milestone in our Movement and for our essential work together in upholding our Fundamental Principles.
