An Update on Indian Red Cross Flood Relief Action

The country this year witnessed the wickedness of the monsoon rains, which engulfed the lives of many, submerged thousands of towns and villages and caused a widespread damage in crores to infrastructure and crops. The States like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar and West Bengal were the worst victims' of flood havoc.

The Indian Red Cross Society , National Headquarter responded timely at the time of disaster with its relief operations in the affected areas. The National Headquarters' released the relief material to the tune of Rs. 1, 06, 25,000 during the period of floods.

National Headquarter (NHQ) released relief items such as bed sheets, sarees, towels, kitchen sets and plastic buckets of 2000 pieces each, dhotis 1000 pieces and cotton blankets 500 pieces value of which amounting to Rs. 6, 00,000 for distribution in Andhra Pradesh. On request from the State Branch Rs. 2 lakh was sanctioned by the National Headquarters for purchase of Chlorine tablets and bleaching powder. Besides this, a joint Need Assessment Team from IFRC and IRCS was also sent to the State to assess the further requirements.

For Gujarat, the NHQ released relief items such as 2000 pieces each of kitchen sets, sarees and woolen blankets, 2780 pieces of cotton blankets, 300 rolls of tarpaulin, 2500 pieces of assorted clothing, 500 pieces of lanterns and 1290 pieces of feeding cup . The total value of relief supplies amounted to Rs. 28, 80,000 approx. On request from the State Branch Rs. 2 lakh was sanctioned by the NHQ for purchase of Chlorine tablets and bleaching powder. Apart from this, two water sanitation units were also installed at Surat to provide potable drinking water to flood affected areas in Surat District.

For Chattisgarh, the NHQ released relief items from Salt Lake warehouse such as kitchen sets, bed sheets, sarees, cotton blankets, woolen blankets, dhotis, buckets and towels 1500 pieces each. The total value of the supplies amounted to Rs. 11, 40,000 approx.

For Rajasthan, the NHQ released relief items such as 1000 pieces each of sarees, dhotis, kitchen sets and 500 pieces each of towels, bed sheets, buckets and ground sheets. The total value of the supplies amounted to Rs. 6, 20,000 approx.

For Madhya Pradesh, the NHQ released relief items such as cotton blankets, bed sheets, dhotis, sarees and towels of 1750 pieces each and 500 rolls of tarpaulin. The total value of the relief supplies amounted to Rs. 11, 75,000 approx.

For Orissa, the NHQ released relief items such as 1000 pieces of kitchen sets, sarees, towels, bed sheets, cotton blankets and mosquito nets, 300 dhotis and 500 pieces each of frock, shirts and kid pajamas. The total value of the relief supplies amounted to Rs. 12, 00,000 approx.

For Jammu & Kashmir, the NHQ released relief items such as 2000 pieces of kitchen sets and cotton blankets value of which amounting to Rs. 8,10,000.

For Bihar, the NHQ released relief items such as 2500 pieces of sarees, dhotis, cotton blankets, bed sheets and cotton towels. The total value of the supplies amounted to Rs. 18, 00,000 approx.

In all times of disaster the National Headquarters was constantly in touch with the State branches and it successfully carried out its relief assistance.
