Red Cross Relief for Flood Victims of Gujarat

Heavy rains lashed the central and northern parts of the Gujarat affecting the Districts of Banaskantha, Patan, Surendranagar, Bhavnagar, Navsari and Ahmedabad. At least 84 people have died and 13 lakh affected and over 12,000 people were evacuated from the low-lying areas.

Transport infrastructure throughout the State has been badly hit. Highways are submerged under floodwaters. Hundreds of passengers have been reported stranded at bus depots, stations and other places. The Central and paramilitary forces have stepped in for relief and rescue operations.

The Gujarat State Red Cross branch has deployed six State disaster response team (SDRT) members and trained volunteers to carry out search and rescue and supervise the relief operation in the field. Jignesh Rawal, SDRT member informed "We are distributing clothes and food items in the three villages near the Gandhinagar District which got affected due to floods. We are also helping people to move from the low-lying areas to the safer places".
The National Headquarter (NHQ) of IRCS has released relief items such as bed sheets, sarees, cotton blankets, assorted blankets, kitchen sets, bed sheets and towels, 3000 pieces each, valued at Rs. 24.75 lakhs for distribution in Gujarat.
