The 8th of May is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day which is observed every year to commemorate the birth of its founder, Sir Henry Dunant. This day all around the world the Red Cross and Red Crescent celebrates the spirit of humanity, and reflects on its work reaching out the vulnerable and helpless in our society. Volunteers have been the backbone of our National Society since its inception in 1920. Today, as ever they are central to all activities of the Indian Red Cross, contributing to our successes in assisting vulnerable people in times of greatest need.

As 2011 marks the ten-year anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers. Ten years ago, the Red Cross Red Crescent movement and its partners worked together to enhance the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of voluntary service. This year we carry that legacy forward by focusing on protection, recognition, and promotion of volunteering globally. We salute the courage, persistence and commitment of our volunteers and recognise their valuable contributions they so freely give. To mark this day the Indian Red Cross Society joins the global campaign “Find the Volunteer inside You” and reconfirms its commitment and recognition of this vital asset and moral fibre of our organisation.

Voluntary service is one of the seven fundamental principles that bind the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement together. We pay homage today to those who willingly render services, lending a helping hand without any material expectation or financial gain. Volunteering is one of the foundations of a strong civic society, in its practice it motivates others.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers whose dedication to help and assist at crucial times, has contributed to making a difference to those in times of need and less fortunate in our society. Your commendable service is admired and let me assure you does not go without recognition .To our biggest treasure and future of our National Society, the youth, we appreciate your enthusiasm and continue to seek ways to harness your potential.

Let’s all join today by reflecting and embracing the spirit of volunteerism and pledge to serve the society by mobilising together for the power of humanity.

Dr  (Prof) S.P Agarwal
Secretary General
