Red Cross Diploma to Disaster Managers

Indian Red Cross Society today conferred diploma upon 72 successful participants of the one year part time PG Diploma Course in Disaster Preparedness and Rehabilitation. The course is being run by the Indian Red Cross Society since 2006. The course participants belonged to 2007-08 & 2008-09 batches.

“The Society embarked upon the onerous task of creating a cadre of disaster managers in the year 2006. So far about 100 people, that include officers from different Govt. departments, public sector undertakings and national and international relief agencies, have qualified to lead disaster management activities in the country. Many of those trained have been deployed in disasters such as Kosi floods in Bihar & H2P Pandemic”,
said Dr. S.P. Agarwal, Secretary General of the Society. He added, “All the students are aware of the principles, procedures and practices of disaster preparedness and rehabilitation cycle within an integral context to aim at reduction and mitigation actions to reduce disaster risk as well as improve the delivery of post disaster assistance to promote effective recovery and rehabilitation.” He further informed that Dr. Kumar Rajan, National Consultant Oral Health, WHO and Dr. Jayanthi Mani Nee Murthy, Chief Medical Officer, CGHS are the toppers of 2007-08 and 2008-09 batches respectively.
 
Mr. Azmat Ulla, Head SARD, IFRC and Mr. Francois Stamm, Head, ICRC, Regional Delegation distributed the diplomas. They exhorted the participants to exhibit their competence by providing leadership into different segments of disaster management such as GIS, GPS, training of disaster response teams and help to reduce the vulnerability of people living in disaster prone areas.”
